Mayday is the internationally recognized distress signal for emergencies. As if through a detective’s lens the dance performance enlarges forms of communication chaos in present-day dynamic, competitive environment. The advent of technology into everyday life helps us exchange information transcending the distances between us. In the multimedia
dance performance “Mayday” the exchange of messages is incessant but does not guarantee an escape in “case of emergency.” The performance bears the characteristic style that the choreographer Zhivko Zhelyazkov has developed over the recent years of vigorous anddynamic dance exploring the possibilities of interaction with new technology. To that end he brings some interesting visual and music artists and visual artists into the production.
Zhivko Zhelyazkov graduated from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts as an actor and specialized dance theatre and contemporary choreography at Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia. He has worked with Sofia based Arabesque Ballet as visiting choreographer. He is co-founder and artistic director of Derida Dance Company and of the first centre for contemporary dance in Bulgaria, Derida Dance Centre where he gives classes. His performances “AR TeFACT”, “Monocrossing” and “Silent Weapon” have been nominated for Ikar Award for best contemporary dance and performance.
The project is realized with the financial support of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture.
