DanceMap: Innovation pathways and policies to promote European dance heritage at home and abroad

DanceMap is a European project funded by the Horizon Europe programme (2025–2027), aiming to safeguard, research, and promote Europe’s dance heritage. Led by Bureau Ritter, the consortium brings together 16 partners from 10 countries, including research centres, universities, archives, and cultural organisations. The project develops a shared strategy and a “roadmap” for sustainable policies in the field of dance heritage, combining empirical research, data, artistic practices, and advocacy. Its main activities include mapping existing initiatives, creating an interactive digital platform, and fostering new models for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage that can be applied across other fields.

Over the next three years, DanceMap will:

  • Map and increase the visibility of existing dance heritage initiatives across Europe, creating a comprehensive directory of archives, collections and knowledge bases.
  • Develop an interactive digital platform comprising both a digital workspace for researchers and a curated, public-facing website. The platform will offer a unique insight into the diversity and richness of European dance heritage, making it accessible to and attractive for a global audience.
  • Advance a holistic, artist-led approach to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, combining digital tools with practice-based methods.
  • Advocate for stronger policy frameworks that recognise and support the preservation and promotion of dance heritage at local, national, and European levels.
