KARPOV NOT KASPAROV (Romania)
20 April, 21.30h, Red House Centre for Culture and Debate, Red Hall
a concert by Eduard Gabia and Valeriu Borcos
A musical game of action and reaction between the drums and a vintage synthethizer. Karpov not Kasparov started as a project by an analog visual artist and two contemporary-dance performers. This resulted an experimental show of theatrical act performed on the spot with a live, real-time soundtrack. Many of these shows were hosted in rather unconventional locations like a barber shop, a public library, an old people’s house, a shoe store or a restaurant toilet.
In autumn 2011 the disc label LocalRecords released an electronic EP called ‘Soundtrack for a Game of Chess”. With a retro-electro-clashy sound that is also reminiscent of jazz, classical and folklore music, the EP was soon considered among the best musical works of the year by Radio Romania Cultural and Radio Europa Libera. It was also selected in the WMFU New York Radio’s playlist and was declared ‘the album of the month’ by Vice Magazine. In 2012 K not K began a series of live shows on local scenes followed by the first European tour in Budapest, Vienna and Berlin.
