KAZUYO SHIONOIRI: EMPTINESS / FULLNESS

NEW WAYS OF EXPRESSION OF THE PHYSICAL BEING

What were you particularly interested in when creating ”Emptiness/ Fullness”?

In the period of creating this piece, I was dealing with the loss of two of my closest people. This piece dealt with loss; with the question of how to orient my self in the world after the most important people for me passed away.

What was the main challenge for you?

Even though I was in a very turbulent period in my life, I tried to approach this piece with very big emotional distance for not just staying with my own mourning, but looking at myself in this situation and understanding something bigger. That was not easy at all.

What experience would you like to create for the audience with this piece?

I don’t give a fuck about the experience of the audience. I’ve performed this piece in more than five different countries and I’ve got very different reactions – from “this is not dance” to “this is too much dance”. Some people were crying, some people called it “it is a weird stuff”, so… I let them space to see themselves in it.

What makes you work in the field of dance and performance?

I’ve been doing it ever since I was very young. I started when I was 4 years old, so it was somewhat natural for me. Later on, I’ve found new meaning in that and nowadays I feel that this is a good platform to discover new ways of expression of the physical being. Every day from the beginning.
