ANALYZING CONTEMPORARY DANCE CRITICALLY: CONCEPTS & PERSPECTIVES
Seminar with Rudi Laermans (Belgium)

part of WITHOUT DISTANCE EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM/ Teachback in the frame of 10th Antistatic International Festival for Contemporary Dance and Performance, (12 – 20 May 2017), Sofia/Bulgaria

18-21 May
Sofia/ Bulgaria

During this four-days seminar, one of Belgian’s leading sociologists and dance critics Rudi Laermans will present in an open way, inviting critical discussion, some concepts and general insights that may be useful to analyze contemporary dance. After discussing the performative nature of the notion of contemporary dance, the seminar will focus on concepts such as theatricality, self-referentiality, re/presentation, criticality… Also, Laermans will introduce the overall perspective that guides him in analyzing contemporary dance and practices of artistic collaboration, i.e. the difference between potentiality and actuality or singularity on the one hand and the idea of “commoning” and “the collaboratory” on the other.

Rudi Laermans is Senior Professor of Social Theory at the Faculty of Social Sciences at KU Leuven, Belgium. Between 1992 and 2006, he was in charge of the Centre for Sociology of Culture and supervised several research projects in Flanders on the field of the visual arts, cultural heritage, cultural policy and the attendance of the performing arts. Since the school’s establishment in 1995, Laermans was also involved in the theoretical program at P.A.R.T.S.; besides, he has been a guest lecturer at many art schools abroad. He has published numerous essays and several books, nationally as well as internationally, on social and cultural theory, cultural policy and participation, contemporary dance and the visual arts. He frequently deploys a sociological perspective, but just as often advances a wider view inspired by contemporary philosophy and political theory. His most recent book is Moving Together. Theorizing and Making Contemporary Dance (2015), published by Valiz, which will be presented in the frame of Antistatic Festival.

The workshop is aimed for students and professional artists and theoreticians in theatre, dance, performance, cultural and art studies from South-East Europe. The seminar will be in English.

For approved international applicants we offer free accommodation for the days of the seminar as well as reduced tickets for the artistic programme of Antistatic International Festival for Contemporary Dance and Performance. The seminar is free of charge for international participants.
